Jl. Roa Malaka Utara No.5, RT.6/RW.3, Roa Malaka
Tambora is a subdistrict located in West Jakarta. It covers an area of 5.4 km² with a population density of 44,794 people/km². Due to its high population and small land area, Tambora is known as the most densely populated area in Southeast Asia.
Administratively, Tambora Subdistrict consists of 11 urban villages, namely Tanah Sareal, Tambora, Roa Malaka, Pekojan, Jembatan Lima, Krendang, Duri Utara, Duri Selatan, Kali Anyar, Jembatan Besi, and Angke.
Geographically, Tambora borders Kali Angke and Penjaringan in the north, Kali Krukut, Taman Sari, and Gambir Subdistrict in the south, and Grogol Petamburan Subdistrict in the west.
The origin of the name Tambora is linked to the construction of Masjid Tambora (Tambora Mosque), located at Jl. Bandongan Masjid No. 11. Built in the 17th century by two Islamic scholars (kyai) from West Nusa Tenggara, the mosque was named after Mount Tambora in Sumbawa.
Historically, the area had five iron bridges connecting neighborhoods in Tambora. These bridges were strong and durable, and one of the urban villages in Tambora was named Jembatan Besi (Iron Bridge Village) after them.
Another notable area is Angke. The name comes from the Hokkien language, where Ang means blood and Ke means river. This refers to a tragic event during the colonial era when Dutch forces massacred thousands of Chinese residents who revolted. Since then, locals have referred to the river as Kali Angke (Blood River).
Today, Tambora continues to develop as a business area, proven by the increasing number of companies operating in the district. Business owners can also rent office space in Tambora through SewaKantorCBD.
